My College Students Act Like Third Graders

I did it. I started my second blog. Here’s my first post on, The Classroom Curator. I won’t be getting in the habit of reblogging my own posts; but this is the first post, so I wanted to give it a proper introduction.

11:57 p.m.

It’s true. They act like third graders. I’m okay with that though, as long as they grow out of it by the time they enter college. Friday evenings usually provide me with a burst of classroom ideas. Don’t know why that is. Friday seems like the mostly likely time of the week, in which I’d be plum out of classroom inspiration. However, Fridays, post dusk, is when my creative gears spin. It may be due to the reflection that occurs during my Friday commute home. ‘Didn’t finish as much writing as I wanted them to. I yelled too much, today. Mondays I’m calm. Fridays I’m not. That’s not fair to them.’ Reflections like that, probably influence my Friday evening inspiration spurts.

Tonight’s spurt is this: Strunk and White’s Elements of Style in the classroom! That’s what we need. It can’t hurt to introduce it to third graders. My…

Not all Educators were Meant to be Tamed.

Not all educators were meant to be tamed. The act of conditioning limits the quality and quantity of what an educator can teach a child. How can a hegemonic administrator evaluate the practice of an original teacher? An original teacher performs on their own paradigm. The learning space is safe; the children are educated; the families are happy. When the evaluator does not recognize that trifecta as proficient, the school is in jeopardy. To oppress the practice of an original teacher, is to oppress the community at large.

I don’t use the word ‘dark’ to represent anything negative, in my classroom. ‘Dark’ is beautiful, and a coveted quality. Period. Any other use of the word, I hesitate to embrace.

As educators, we work towards being masters of connections; connecting children to curriculum, connecting curriculum to culture. Our ability to successfully teach a child depends on our ability to connect with them. Now the start of a new school year, I meditate on this: For every aspect of a child that I don’t understand, can’t figure out, and get frustrated and fed up with, there is an equal aspect of myself that my students don’t understand. If I think a student is dishonest, then in their minds they see me as dishonest. If I think that a student doesn’t care about learning, they are thinking that I don’t care about teaching them. Trust: I must give it, to receive it. The child reflects the behaviors of their parent. Students reflect the behaviors of their teacher. If a student isn’t learning, it is because I am not teaching them – a dysfunctional teacher. Let’s keep it functional.

Students return to school tomorrow, in my district. I am in a different role than I was last school year. When speaking with my principal today, he said that I can teach well because I connect well with students. These thoughts are my contemplation on that conversation.
